Dulce Pinzon’s Superheroes

super01

Superheroes according to Dulce Pinzon are not those born with super powers or bitten by a radioactive spider. They are migrant workers who make huge sacrifices in order to send money to their families back home. Looking at these photos alongside their captions, I’d have to say I agree.

Leah Gordon’s Voodoo Carnival

phpthumb_generated_thumbnailjpg

A gallery exhibit in London currently features Leah Gordon’s Voodoo Carnival series, in which she documented the Kanaval event in Haiti. The pictures themselves are as stunning as they are haunting – rooted in religion, scarred by slavery. I’d like to go to the exhibit just to read some of the side stories that went along with these photos:

One man captured front-on in a very fetching off-the-shoulder lace number explains how his gender-bending interpretation of the Devil as a transvestite came to him in a vision when he was working on a sugar cane plantation in the Dominican republic.

Indeed.

I love this picture by Artem Svoka. Jumping + umbrella + hand-holding. That is all.

The 2009 Hollywood Portfolio by Annie Leibovitz

actors-directors-0903-pp09

Last year Roy and I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a tiny underground café in America-mura in Osaka, Japan. We went there to eat something quick before meeting up with a friend for karaoke (an experience I don’t really want to re-live, thanks). Little did we know the café was hosting a photo gallery by none other than Annie Leibovitz, famed photographer of celebrities. Posted all around the walls were beautiful black and white portraits of big shots and even a video containing a montage of celebrity quotes about Ms. Leibovitz was playing on a loop.

And so comes the 2009 Hollywood Portfolio, which features pairs of actors or directors that garnered a lot of attention for their work in 2008. The commentary is also worth reading next to the pictures as they offer some interesting insight.
